What is now known as the Madden Inn was originally the Arthur Roberts Pine Beach Hotel. Construction of the Roberts Pine Beach Hotel began next to the Pine Beach Golf Course in 1929. The hotel was owned by hotelier Arthur Roberts and a group of Brainerd businessmen. Though the Maddens were not yet involved, this is the year credited as the official founding of what is today Madden’s on Gull Lake.
In the Spring of 1930, the Roberts Pine Beach Hotel opened and was sold out for its first 4th of July. For many years, the hotel was operated by the Roberts family and was separate from the golf course and Madden’s properties.
Years later in 1965, Arthur Roberts’ daughter in law, who was running the hotel with her husband, was ready to sell and the Madden’s acquired the hotel, renaming it the Pine Beach Hotel and connecting it to the golf club.
